One of the real treasures from the early years of indexing at the turn of the nineteenth century is Nancy Bailey’s Index to The Times. I’m fortunate to own a three volume set for 1899 through to 1901. Published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, each monthly section has a handsomely designed and printed cover in mauve on grey paper. The twelve monthly issues for each year were cumulated into a single annual volume (price 15s.), but my set is a binding of the individual instalments: they are bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering and the mark of King’s College London.
