Knight Obi-Wan Kenobe rather than for his far superior work in repertory and in the Ealing comedies. Guinness notoriously despised the popular celebrity he attained through the Star Wars films and threw away fan mail without reading it.
Guinness lies buried in Petersfield Cemetery. I was up there this afternoon, indexing on my favourite bench. I came across a passing mention of Pierre Boulle’s novel on which the film The Bridge On the River Kwai was based, and for which Guinness won an Oscar. A tenuous association, but on my way home I stopped by his headstone and took a photograph. It’s a very lowly monument for such a distinguished actor. The inscription has almost eroded away and there is a single faded pink flower to add a touch of melancholy .
