I have just finished compiling an index to Kate Clarke’s ‘In the Interests of Science’, a wonderful account of the celebrated Adelaide Bartlett murder trial of 1886.It’s a fascinating case, full of ‘unpleasant subjects’ as Mr Justice Wills stated in his summing up at the Old Bailey... Liquid chloroform poisoning, mesmerism, delusional parasitosis, and a self-regarding Wesleyan probationary minister who proved weak when tempted with fleshy delights.
