Yesterday evening, I finished indexing Deadly Service by Kate Clarke, a dark assortment of case studies of servants who kill. It includes gruesome accounts of Kate Webster and the Papin sisters from Le Mans, as well as Louisa Merrifield, the Blackpool housekeeper, who saw off her employer with rat poison. Footman John Lee (the ‘Man They Could Not Hang’) makes an appearance, as does Charles Houghton, the butler from Burghill, and Jane Cox, the devious housekeeper at the centre of the notorious Charles Bravo poisoning mystery. The book ends with a look at Roy Fontaine, the Monster Butler, who killed five times and died a few years ago just down the road in Portsmouth Prison.
It's published next month by Mango Books, and will make a great Xmas gift
